About Ryan

Ryan, Cornovii Electrical - sole-trader electrician based in Penzance

Born at Treliske hospital in Truro, raised in the Penwith area having lived in various places from St. Just, Newlyn, Marazion and Penzance, I have a deep connection, love and knowledge of the local area. Now a family man of three young boys (so far!), I don't plan on going anywhere else.

I started training as an electrician in 2013 at Camborne college, getting bits of work experience where I could with different electricians and companies. Eventually I found someone to take me on as an apprentice and gained valuable skills across domestic, commercial and industrial settings, then completed my training with the final AM2 assessment. Then in 2020, after getting more of my own private work, I went self-employed while also sub-contracting for another company. This gave me the flexibility to complete my own jobs when I had them, building up the business, and also gave me the opportunity to hone my skills in different areas, exchanging knowledge between colleagues. It didn't take long before my calendar was being filled by more and more of my own jobs, resulting in me being completely independent.

Being in Penwith, I also get a chance to see some beautiful places I otherwise would not know about, and build relationships with brilliant people who I maintain contact with following completion of their projects. I realised that many of my customers preferred the personal connection when requesting my services, rather than meeting a different person than they spoke to over the phone for the site visit, then getting different employees through the various stages of work, with each new person playing catch up.

Close long term relationships with clients and local tradesmen has shown me that communication and co-operation from first fix to second fix gives the client the best possible outcome. Big or small, from start to finish, whether the work is hidden behind walls or completely on show, there is pride throughout each project.

While the trade can have some questionable moments - such as crawling around a hot itchy loft looking for a hidden junction box under insulation, routing cables through granite walls, or squeezing under floors that nobody has been under for half a century - its variety keeps me interested with no lack of surprises. Some fault finding jobs, while often overwhelming at first, can be very rewarding when methodically tracking down and pinpointing a fault causing an RCD to trip. It is also satisfying seeing a newly purchased shell of a property and being involved in its transformation becoming somebody's future home, then in the years after going back when modifications or condition reports are needed. Even just the act of helping someone over the phone to potentially get a portion of their power back on, while waiting to get someone in to rectify the issue, can give me a strong sense of self worth.
